The Fungi ...Fungi comprise some of the most unexpectedly beautiful living things in the forest. They can also be some of the largest organisms in the forest. While the mushrooms and other visible fruiting bodies we are familiar with are not very large, they are but a small part of the organism. The mycelium of the fungus may extend beneath the ground for hundreds of feet in all directions. I am aware of one such organism in Beaman Park that I estimate is some 400 feet long and 40 or more feet in width! |
